A 10 Second Blast

Color
A short and sweet video. Just a simple blast of color from a mural in SW Detroit. Put this one away and take out when one of those cold, gray days comes to Detroit this winter. Celebrate summer while you can!

Driving in Detroit: Graffiti and a Mural

Graffiti in the Hood

Party store covered in graffiti Detroit
Interesting signage
Traveling through southwest Detroit, I came upon a couple of blocks with some interesting graffiti and a mural by the Alley Project. More information about the cool Alley Project can be found at their Facebook page here.

Closed

The party store at the end of the video and pictured in the photo above is no longer in business, but they definitely had some of the funkiest signage for their store!

Horses in Detroit

Transportation

Three men riding horses in Southwest Detroit
Tres hombres a caballo - Three men on horseback
As I've said before one of the best things about living in Detroit, or for that matter just spending time in the city, is that you never know what you're going to see. While heading home after dinner in Southwest Detroit, I got to witness an alternate means of transportation you don't see every day, horseback.

Casual Ride

One of the most interesting things about seeing the riders, other than the utter casualness of their ride, was when they pass through the gas station parking lot. They just cut right past a car that had finished getting gas. It was kind of an "old meets new" in the history of travel.

The Virgin of Guadalupe in Southwest Detroit

The Virgin Mary

When traveling through Southwest Detroit, home to a large Latino population, you will inevitably come across paintings of the Virgin Mary. Quite often the representation you'll see is of the Virgin of Guadalupe (Our Lady of Guadalupe). To read her story click on this wikipedia link. She is the patron saint of Mexico, and the image is quite popular in stores and other locations.

Photos

The following is photo tour of some of my favorite images of La Virgen de Guadalupe that I've seen in my travels. The first photo in the series is a closeup and is followed with a longer shot to give some perspective of where the image is.

Faith

Regardless of your faith the images have cultural significance and add beauty to the neighborhoods. One of the photos isn't a painting of Our Lady of Guadalupe, but it's still nice, so don't get technical just enjoy!

The last two images are not the first time this painting of the Virgin Mary appeared in Detroit Video Daily. Check out this previous post to read about the photo. Note how the rest of the wall has changed.

What other spots in Southwest Detroit have paintings that I should check out? Leave a comment and let me know!

Bagley Pedestrian Bridge Photo

Sunny Day
After the recent Cinco de Mayo Parade, I walked over the Bagley Pedestrian Bridge to retrieve my buggy. There was ample parking in the area, although I'm sure that changed because one last fiesta was setting up in the open space near the bridge. Because of the beautiful weather I hung out for a bit and snapped a few photos. The one below is my favorite, so I thought I'd share it with you all. If you are wondering what it's like to walk over the bridge take a look at this older video.

Cinco de Mayo Parade 2012 - Detroit

Parade Highlights
Cinco de Mayo Parade Detroit 2012
The Start of the Parade
Probably the most difficult task was after the parade was over. That's when I realized that I had to edit all the video I shot from this year's Cinco de Mayo parade. Unfortunately, I had to cut out some parts because of time constraints, so my apologies if you were in the parade and didn't make it into this year's video. I had to make a some tough decisions, but I think you'll find that the video captures the atmosphere of a fun family event held in Southwest Detroit, home to a large Latino population.

Politicians
You'll notice a few politicians are in the video, and the political highlight for Detroit Video Daily was when Southfield's mayor, Brenda Lawrence, stopped by to greet the crowd. This was actually the second time I met Mayor Lawrence. The first, was years ago during her initial campaign for the mayoral office. She was outside a credit union passing out campaign literature and asked me if I was a Southfield resident; upon hearing my "no" reply, she still shook my hand and said hello. Not sure what she is like as a politician but she struck me then, as now, as a genuinely nice person. But don't read that as any political endorsement. :)

Police Incident
Right around the 11:30 mark in the video you'll see a lit bit of a commotion. What happened was one of the drivers of a muscle car (a few car clubs showed off their vehicles) spun his tires causing smoke and a loud squealing noise. Apparently, that's a big "no, no" and the police lining the sides of the parade route stepped in quickly and removed the driver from his car. If you look across to the other side of the street in the following scene you will see him being escorted away. One of the parade viewers near me explained to her friends the danger was that if he lost control of his car, it wouldn't have been a pretty scene. So hats off or should I say, sombreros off to the Detroit Police for quick action. Other than that very minor incident, there were no problems at my vantage point, which by the way was near the end of the parade route. All in all, the parade was nothing but good solid family fun.

Suggestions for Viewing
First don't be put off by the length of the video, it goes by fast IMHO (in my humble opinion). So mix yourself a margarita, pour up a Jarrito or a Dos Equis and maybe make a snack of chips and salsa then sit back and enjoy the highlights from the parade. ¡Viva México!

Did you celebrate Cinco de Mayo? What did you do? Leave a comment and let me know what I missed!

Bagley Pedestrian Bridge - Detroit

Build It and It will Be Walked
The Bagley Pedestrian Bridge officially opened on May 5, 2010 as part of a Cinco de Mayo celebration in Mexicantown. This one of a kind bridge was created during the Gateway Project that was a major construction overhaul of the freeways that improved access to the Ambassador Bridge.  Ever since then, I've wanted to take a stroll across it.  "Why?", you might ask?  Well, I can only respond with, "Why not?"

Too Much Information?
It's an interesting bridge, and I've come to find out from a case study on lusas.com that it's "the first cable-stayed bridge to be built in the state of Michigan."  The detailed overview on lusas.com also contains this gem: "The bridge superstructure comprises a trapezoidal single-cell steel box girder of constant depth and varying width topped by a concrete slab that varies from 15ft-3in to 34ft in width over its length." -- Umm... Yeah.  I can tell you this, it took me a little over four minutes to walk across the bridge, and it's pretty cool the way it connects two parts of Mexicantown. :)

So here's the video, hope you enjoy it!

The Virgin Mary, Tamales and the Honeybee

Photos
Detroit Video Daily was pleasantly surprised regarding one of its photos. Let me explain. DVD has a Flickr set called Detroit, MI USA (I know not very creative, but oh well, it works), and just today a Flickr user named "On Being" added one of the recent photos to a Flickr gallery they created. The gallery can be seen if you click here.  Upon looking at On Being’s profile, I discovered that it is a group from the public radio program On Being that curates the online gallery.  I’m not familiar with the program, but it sounds like an interesting show, and I plan on giving it a listen. In case you didn’t click on the above link, this is the photo of the Virgin of Guadalupe that they selected.

The painting is on the side of a vacant building on W. Vernor near St. Anne Street. It looks as if someone may be prepping the wall for a mural, but I’m not sure. It caught my eye, and I was pleased with the way the colors came out.

Mmmm... Tamales
I happened to be on my way to pick up some tamales from Tamaleria Nuevo Leon when I saw the painting. (If you like tamales and haven’t been to Tamaleria Nuevo Leon, you should definitely stop over there.) Here is a photo of their shop.

In case you’re wondering that’s a relief sculpture of Ponce de Leon above the doorway. Don’t worry if you didn’t recognize him, I had to ask. Check out this close up to really appreciate Ponce and his sunglasses.

Grocery Shopping
By the way if you’re in that neighborhood, you might as well head down the street and around the corner on Bagley to Honey Bee Market, La Colmena. They have incredibly fresh produce, and items that aren’t found at the chain grocery stores. They also have a deli and are known for their Mexican chorizo sausage.
