First Happy Thanksgiving to all of Detroit Video Daily's loyal readers, and welcome to all the newcomers to the blog. There truly is much to be thankful for here in my corner of the city. I hope that where ever you are that you are enjoying the day. Today of course was made just a little extra special because for the first time in nine long years the Detroit Lions won their annual Thanksgiving day football game against the Green Bay Packers. Final score Lions 40 and the Packers 10. Add this to the Detroit turnaround you keep hearing about!

Sure there's a bankruptcy going on in Detroit, but the big topic of conversation is the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers are struggling a bit in the American League Championship Series (ALCS) versus the Boston Red Sox. The Tigers are down two games to one in the series, but they are currently winning game four as I write this post.

Division Series
The Tigers are struggling in their American League Division Series (ALDS) against the Oakland A's. The Athletics are currently up in the series two games to one. I went to a game earlier this summer, and unfortunately the Tigers lost. But it's time to turn this thing around!

Game One of a Doubleheader

Tigers vs. Royals
The Detroit Tigers made up a game that was rained out back in April against the Kansas City Royals Friday afternoon at Comerica Park. It was game one of what is known as a split double header. The teams played an early game (1:08 pm start) and then played again in the evening (7:08 pm start).
Unfortunately, the Tigers lost both games! Detroit Video Daily was on hand to witness the first loss.

Pitchers' Duel
The Tiger pitching ace Justin Verlander pitched a great game, but he had no offensive support and ended up losing. He only allowed two runs, but that was enough to beat the Tigers incredibly silent bats. Danny Duffy the pitcher for the Royals held the normally powerful Tigers to only one hit through five and two thirds innings. Later Ramon Santiago smacked a home run against the KC relief pitcher Aaron Crow giving the Tigers their only run.

Despite the loss DVD was able to snap some photos and shoot some video. Be forewarned Tiger fans, the video is tough to watch because it shows baseball's greatest hitter Miguel Cabrera striking out in the ninth inning. All in all it was still good to go to the ball park and take in some baseball on a beautiful afternoon.

Buy Me Some Peanuts and...

Cookies!
Forget about peanuts and Cracker Jack. There's a new snack in town that's ready for the ball park, or where ever you might watch the Detroit Tigers. I couldn't pass up these cookies when I saw them at the supermarket. Much like I couldn't pass up this breakfast cereal.

The box tells you that they're "delicious" and to be honest they're pretty good. Basically, they're a short bread style cookie. Other notable features are the "baseball icons" and the official Major League Baseball silver sticker. The MLB sticker doesn't show up too well in the photo, but it's a shiny little eye catcher that let's you know that the cookies are... umm... official.

Now we all know that some foods just go together, you know like peanut butter and jelly. So if you're going to have cookies, you might as well have some milk. And then you're ready to root for the home team. Go Tigers!

Move over hotdogs, peanuts and cracker jack, a new flavor of ice cream is here just in time for Tiger baseball. Hudsonville Ice Cream has released the limited edition Tiger Traxx, and I thought I could wait until the home opener to try it out, but I couldn't. 

Delicious

The unique flavor is a blend of chocolate fudge swirls, chocolate covered pretzel baseballs (!) and vanilla ice cream. What does this all mean? Very simply, a delicious treat, and it's sure to be a hit :) Now we just need some warmer weather, so we can enjoy this ice cream in a cone outside.

Home Opener

The Tigers begin their season at Comerica Park Friday, so there's plenty of time to get some ice cream and celebrate the start of baseball in Detroit. Go Tigers!

Lion Scarecrow

Detroit Lions

Detroit loves its sports teams, and plenty of people show their pride by wearing team jerseys. However, this one was a first for me. I came across this jersey in someone's backyard and had to snap a photo. Best I can tell is it's a Detroit Lion scarecrow. The number 20 jersey has been worn by Lions' greats Lem Barney, Billy Sims and of course the incredible Barry Sanders.

Fastest

Without a doubt Barry Sanders was the most exciting running back I've ever seen play. His ability to take a 'ho hum' running play and turn it into one worthy of a highlight reel was amazing. I'll never forget attending a Monday Night Football game at the no longer used Pontiac Silverdome and being blown away by how fast Sanders was. We had seats far away from the field, and on one play he bounced off a couple of defensemen and bing he was gone. I can still see it. I've never seen another running back with his speed. At any rate, the number 20 jersey for this Lion fan has a new use.

Tough Series

I'm just now getting around to posting my pics from the World Series. The Tigers played horrible, and got swept by the San Francisco Giants. The way Detroit played was simply depressing. No offense from the Tigers, and the series was quickly over. Oh well, it was still a great run, and it was good to see the Tigers in the series. Let's hope that they'll be back next year! Here's some pics I shot just before the final game got under way.

Tigers Need to Win!

Well, the good luck peanuts from yesterday didn't work, and the Tigers lost 2 - 0 to the San Francisco Giants in game three of the 2012 World Series. Very disappointing showing by our Tigers. However, Detroit Video Daily dug into the video archives and found an outside tour of the Tiger's home field Comerica Park. Here's hoping it provides the luck needed for tonight's game.

The Stadium

For those that have never been to Comerica, it's a great place to watch a game. There's plenty of attractions at the park, including a ferris wheel and carousel, and even a way to catch some of the game from the street. (See this previous post.)

Victory

But the matter at hand is a Tiger victory in tonight's game four. No other team in baseball history has come back from a series when down three games to none. So let's go Tigers and make history!

The Detroit Tigers are down two games in the 2012 World Series against the San Francisco Giants. Time to break open a special bag of peanuts and watch the Tigers get a much needed win at Comerica Park.

I was lucky enough to get a free ticket to the Detroit Yacht Club APBA Gold Cup race on the Detroit River, but circumstances prevented me from getting down there during the day. I later discovered that there were some water and wind problems, and the race had been delayed. This worked to my advantage, and I was able to go down to Henderson Park to watch the final heat.

First Boat Race

This was my first boat race, and coincidently it had delays like the other first racing event I went to this summer. I hope it's coincidence and not me. :) At any rate, it was fun to see the boats flying by, and I was glad to capture it on video.

Fourth of July and Tiger Baseball

America's Pastime

A very happy Fourth of July to all of Detroit and citizens of the United States, no matter where you may be! Independence Day is marked traditionally by fireworks, barbecues and for some, watching baseball. The Detroit Tigers have a game today against the Twins, and of course DVD wants to see a victory.

George Mullin - Tigers Pitcher

I was online earlier today and discovered information about a former Tigers pitcher named George Mullin. He played for the Tigers from 1902 to 1913 and was quite successful.

Fourth of July Importance?

The Fourth of July is significant for the right handed pitcher Mullin because not only was he born on July fourth in 1880, but he also pitched the Tigers first no-hitter on July 4, 1912. The no-hit victory was the second game of a double header against the St. Louis Browns played at Navin Field (former name for Tiger Stadium). The Tigers won 7 - 0 and Mullin contributed to the victory with three hits and two RBIs (there was no designated hitter in the American league back then.)

Records 

George Mullin was a work-horse right handed pitcher and still holds a few records for the Detroit Tigers.

• Most complete games by a right handed pitcher -- 42 in 1904.
• Most innings pitched by right handed pitcher -- 382 and 1/3 in 1904.

And, unfortunately he is the Tigers record holder for the most games lost by a right handed pitcher, when he lost 23 games in 1904. But, to recap on a positive note in 1909 he led the American League with 29 wins, and he was a 20 game winner in five seasons during his career.

Today

So today on Fourth of July 2012 let's see if the Tigers can get a victory against the Twins to celebrate the Fourth of July and to remember George Mullin former Tiger great!

Detroit Grand Prix 2012

First Time for Everything

I've been racing around the last few days, (sorry couldn't help myself with the pun) and I'm just now posting the footage I shot from my first visit to the Detroit Grand Prix. The Grand Prix returned to Belle Isle after a four year absence, and it was a welcomed return. I was lucky enough to be offered a free ticket to the event, (thanks guys!) and really wasn't sure what to expect. I will be honest, I'm not much of a race fan, but I do like to experience new things, so off to the races I went.

Reaction
My impression of the race was in a word: cool. I know that word gets tossed about quite a bit, but it really was something to hear and see these cars live! The weather was windy, but comfortable, and the crowd was a pleasant mix of hard core race fans, young, old and families. And as these cars flew around the turn it was awesome. There were also two giant TV screens set up so you could see the cars race on the parts of the track that were out of your view.

The Track
Yes, there was a track malfunction. Portions of the asphalt wouldn't stay put, and after causing two crashes the officials stopped the race after lap 45 to investigate. The track was repaired in numerous spots, and after a delay (reports said an hour and forty-five minutes, but I say it was an hour and a half, but hey what's fifteen minutes in the big picture) the race got going again. In the video that follows this post you'll see that as the cars pull out of the pit to start racing again, not all made it out. The race was also shortened to 60 laps instead of the original 90.

The Winner
Scott Dixon won the race, and in a crazy day of racing he maintained a lead throughout the entire race. On a side note once the race got back underway, there was a 20 second rain shower that only lasted long enough for one to think, "what the heck, now it's going to rain after an hour and a half delay?" :) However, rain wasn't in the cards, and it stopped. After the race finished we were leaving the island and the rain started back up again. This time it came pouring down for a few minutes and resulted in a double rainbow across the sky. Oh, and did I mention that it was a full moon? There's a count down timer to next year's race on the Detroit Grand Prix website, and DVD is already looking forward to the 2013 race!

Tigers Opening Day Victory 2012

The Tigers Justin Verlander had a great opening day start, but unfortunately he was pulled after eight innings and didn't get the win.  Oh well, it's good that the Tigers started off the season with a victory.  Wonder if there's any truth to the rumor in the above news clipping?  Mmmmmm... Fastball Flakes.

Almost Here 
Opening Day 2012 for the Detroit Tigers is almost here, and there's definitely a positive vibe in the air as we expect great things from last year's Central Division first place team.  Even though the Tigers didn't win the American League Championship it was still an exciting season, and we owe most of that to our star pitcher Justin Verlander.

Breakfast
Last year Verlander had an incredible season, and when I saw Fastball Flakes at the store I couldn't pass it up.  I've always heard that in order for a celebrity to endorse a product that they have to actually use the product (or consume as the case may be.)  So I guess it's safe to assume that Wheaties isn't his breakfast cereal of choice?

Fastball
Verlander's fastball is legendary, and he regularly serves up pitches at over 90 mph often making batters look downright silly trying to hit the ball.  Just in case you've forgotten the stats from his incredible Cy Young award and Most Valuable Player award winning 2011 season, the side of Fastball Flakes gives you the recap.

I'll have to admit they taste pretty good. And there's a huge temptation to say they "taste Grrrrreat" but that just wouldn't be right stealing the tag line from another famous tiger.

Detroit Sports

One thing Detroit life has over other cities is sports.  Simply put we have great sports teams.  Well let's put it this way, if our sports teams aren't doing great, we still have great fans.  Yours truly is one that grew up with Tiger baseball, and before we get too much farther into football season, I thought it would be a good idea to post Detroit Video Daily's Tiger playoff video.  The Tigers battled against the Texas Rangers in the 2011 American League Championship Series (ALCS), and even though the Tigers would lose the series there were some exciting ball games.

As I traveled home the night of game four, a misty drizzle was falling but not enough to stop play.  Listening to the game on the radio, I passed the lights of Comerica Park, and the next thing I know I find myself searching for a parking spot near the park where one can view the game from the street.  In order to watch the game from the street, one needs to climb up and perch oneself on a wall near center field.  The wall's not that high, but in case you can't climb up a helpful fan left a couple of milk crates out to function as make shift steps.  It really gives new meaning to standing room only.

Video  

So here's a brief look at the top of the 7th inning when the Rangers were at bat.  The video also has footage of the statues depicting former Tiger stars that are a wonderful touch to a beautiful Comerica Park. I left my spot on the wall and wandered down toward the scoreboard to capture that part of the video.  One interesting note is that the Ranger's Nelson Cruz was up to bat, and you will see him on the scoreboard.  In this at bat he grounded out, but later in the game he hit a home run in the eleventh inning to seal the Ranger's victory. Cruz was simply on fire in the series, and he ended up hitting a total of six home runs in a series that went six games.  It was nice to soak up some of the playoff atmosphere at the park, but I didn't stay long, and quickly made it home to watch the replay of a Brandon Inge home run in the bottom of the seventh.  For posterity sake here's the game recap from ESPN.  As the saying goes, "wait till next year!"
