Snow Day in Detroit

Today was a snow day in Detroit. Schools throughout the city were closed.

Still Cold.
The Weather
Dangerously cold temperatures and bone chilling wind chill factor continues to cover metro Detroit. As they say a pictures worth a thousand words, so check out the temperature this morning.
Bear in mind 32 degrees is freezing!

How Cold Is It?
Polar Vortex
Just in case you read yesterday's post and weren't sure how cold it is in Detroit, today's post should clear things up. The polar vortex is apparently the reason for the extremely cold temperatures in Detroit the past few days. Today's high is expected to be 3° Fahrenheit. Currently as I write this post it is 2° below zero. Bearing in mind that 32° is freezing, it's very cold right now.

I came across this trick online today and decided to give it a try. Basically when it's this cold outside you can take boiling water and throw it into the wind, and it turns into snow. The key is to throw it into wind that is blowing away from you. Apparently, some people online were burned when the water flew back at them. So my advice is don't bother trying this just watch the video instead. :)

Nature Runneth Over
Urban Nature
What may seem contradictory (urban and nature) isn't necessarily the case in Detroit. In many neighborhoods there are vacant lots where nature takes its course and well... just starts growing. Case in point is in the video. At one time it was an empty lot waiting to be developed into condominiums that were sprouting up :) in the neighborhood. Then the real estate market took a turn for the worse. No more development, and hello Mother Nature.
Not for Everyone
Now some people may not like the overgrowth of the lot. However, it doesn't really bother me. I suppose it would be nice to have more housing, but the trees and tall grass are pleasant enough. What do you think?

Tall Grass
Beauty
I'm not going to lie, there are parts of Detroit that aren't beautiful. And there are plenty of photographers that like to shoot the run down buildings and document the destruction of abandonment. I'm not opposed to "ruin porn" photography, it's just that I think sometimes it gets more attention than other aspects of Detroit.

Which brings me to today's photo. There are patches of this tall grass that grow in various vacant lots in the city, and it's a nice visual break from all the buildings. It also provides a hang out for the pheasants. In fact, I scared a couple into flight as I moved close to snap this picture. I didn't have my camera ready, so you'll have to just imagine that one. At any rate, here's today's nature break....

Trees Eating Signs

The city of Detroit has always been known as a place with lush trees gracing the city streets and parks. Unfortunately, it has also seen its share of tree problems from the Dutch Elm disease to the relatively more recent Emerald Ash Borer problem discovered in 2002.Hungry Trees
